We thank the LHC staff and volunteers who developed and implemented this exhibit. The staff of the Heritage State Park, as always, offered their assistance and expertise. It was just the artifact needed to remind us all of a time when we heard the clang of the box lid closing, rather that the ping of the email arriving. The Lawrence Post Office came through a real post office box - the smaller, post top variety some us remember in "earlier"years. The Lawrence History Center is very grateful to collectors Joe Bella and Phil Laverierre for their donations to the exhibit. Other exhibits and historical information completed the exhibit. Highlighting the local US Post Office was one theme along with the the origins of the Lawrence Philatelist ( Stamp Collecting ) Society.

There were some unusual Historical images on display as well as some unusual Art post card formats. The Photographic collection was a fine example of personal stories communicated in an art form of the post card. Holiday Greeting cards as well as business cards were quaint and colorful. The Lawrence Views collection included scenes we are very familiar with as well as some we might find hard to imagine being in Lawrence. One collection is from an airman in the war in France another is a collection written between a newly wed couple. Looking further we gathered post cards from other war time eras, the most poignant being from WWI.

The post cards, although written during war time are often humorous and full of jokes and bravado. The post cards were sent to the hang-out, hung on a bulletin board for all the friends to read. The idea for the exhibit came from a collection of postcards from a local young men's hang-out on Common Street during WWII. Examples of post card types include Views, Greetings, Historical, Art and Photographic. Deltiology, the formal name for post card collecting, became popular in the United States prior to World War I. This post card exhibit highlighted wonderful examples of postcards from the Lawrence History Center Collection as well as from local collectors. reads: "Hello Tony, The reason I addressed this card to the pool hall is that I don't want to let the folks know I'm broke so see if you can scrape five bucks and send it to me and I'll see you on pay day. This 1942 WWII postcard to Finno's Pool Room on Common St. Postcard from Ned Leone ~ Finno's Pool Hall Collection Wish You Were Here - A Written Art Form ~ Lawrence Post Cards So get in on the fun, won’t you? Send me your address and watch your mailbox for a postcard from somewhere in the U.S.A.Lawrence History Center, Immigrant City Archives and Museum held an exhibit at the Lawrence Heritage State Park in 2007 entitled: One time I sent a postcard, from Cabo San Lucas, and my niece received it 6 months later. Unfortunately, I can’t send them out of the U.S. Or, private message me on our blog’s Facebook page. If you would like a postcard from a surprise location somewhere in the U.S., send me an email – – with your name and mailing address and I’ll send you a postcard. I love receiving them and I love sending them, so I’m looking forward to mailing a few as we travel. As you know Abi and I will soon be hitting the road for a 2-month road trip around this vast country of ours and I’m all about the postcard. Today’s society, as we all know, is all about the hurried fulfillment of right now and how fast can it happen? Remember the good old days of, “Having a wonderful time, wish you were here?” The process has taken a back seat to text messages and emails. It takes time to write a postcard, address it, adhere a stamp and mail it on its way. With Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Google+ alike, wait – not so much Google+ cuz there’s nothing going on over there. I’m not exactly sure why that is, but at the same time I am pretty sure it has a lot to do with the age of technology. Like so many other things such as hand-written letters and thank you cards, sending postcards has become a lo st art.

When was the last time you sent a postcard to someone while you were traveling? For that matter, when was the last time you received a postcard from someone who was traveling?
